Ice cave season 2026-27

A new ice cave forms under Breiðamerkurjökull every year, and the season now has fixed limits. Here is what is open this winter and how to see it from Jökulsárlón.

The natural ice caves near Jökulsárlón are in Breiðamerkurjökull, the glacier tongue that feeds the lagoon. Meltwater carves them in summer, and guides go looking for the new ones every autumn. No two winters have the same cave.

This post covers the 2026-27 season as of 15 October 2026: when it opened, which caves the operators found, the rules that came in after the 2024 accident, and which tours start at the lagoon.

The quick answer

The 2026-27 ice cave season in Vatnajökull National Park opened on 1 October 2026 and runs through the winter to about April; the caves are closed by rule from May to September. This year's main cave on Breiðamerkurjökull is called Verdandi, reached by a walk of roughly 2 km each way. Every tour meets at the Jökulsárlón car park, and only licensed guides can take you in. From November to March is the safest window to book.

When do the ice caves near Jökulsárlón open for 2026-27?

The season opened on 1 October 2026. Tours run until about April, conditions allowing, and the caves are closed from May to September.

Since 2025 the season has hard edges. Reykjavík Grapevine reported that "the ice cave season is now strictly defined, with caves closed from May through September". Operators work inside that window. Local Guide of Vatnajökull, one of the licensed companies, scheduled its 2026-27 start for 1 October 2026.

The start was wet. Heavy rain at the end of September flooded the main cave on opening day, and Local Guide moved its cave guests to a blue ice tour instead. Around 4 October tours resumed to the main cave. Expect the same thing to happen again after any long spell of rain or warm wind. October and April are the edges of the season; November to March is the core.

How do the ice caves change from year to year?

Completely. Meltwater carves new tunnels each summer, the glacier moves, and last year's caves collapse or wash away. Operators scout every autumn.

An ice cave here is a meltwater channel inside or under the glacier. In summer, water cuts through the ice; in winter the flow drops and the frozen tunnel is left behind. The glacier keeps moving, so by the next summer that tunnel is crushed, melted or flooded. Guide to Iceland puts it simply: the shape, size and location differ every season.

For 2026-27, Local Guide's scouts found Verdandi, "a spacious natural cave beside the lagoon at the glacier's terminal face", about 200 metres long, plus smaller features named Blami, Top Gun, Goose and Ice Man. A road extension had a permit but rain delayed the work; until it is done, the walk to Verdandi is about 1.8 to 2 km each way. "Crystal Cave" on a tour title is a trade name for whichever cave is running that year, not one fixed place.

Are the ice caves safe after the 2024 accident?

They are run under stricter rules now. Licensed companies check every cave each morning and must stay out of any cave judged unsafe that day.

In August 2024 a visitor died when ice collapsed at Breiðamerkurjökull on a summer tour, and the national park suspended ice cave tours. They restarted that autumn under new contracts (Iceland Monitor). Companies now name an experienced lead guide to a joint assessment group that inspects each cave and any overhanging ice daily. If the group calls a site unsafe, nobody goes in.

For 2025-26, 30 of 34 applicants got contracts, each guide may lead only 8 to 16 guests depending on the tour, and the Nature Conservation Agency can cap visitor numbers to stop crowding (Grapevine). Never walk into a cave on your own: the park rangers at Breiðamerkursandur answer on +354 842 4355, and SafeTravel posts current warnings.

Which ice cave tours meet at Jökulsárlón?

Most of them. The cave tours drive out from the main Jökulsárlón car park by super jeep, so you need to get yourself to the lagoon, about 390 km from Reykjavík.

Guide to Iceland's ice cave tour is the one we list: 3 hours, a maximum of 28 people, meeting at the "Crystal Cave Tours" sign next to the main car park. Helmets, crampons and warm clothes are provided; stiff hiking boots are not, and the listing turns away anyone without them. Family-run Glacier Trips sells a 2.5 to 3-hour cave tour direct from ISK 23,900, ages 8 and up, groups of 14.

From Reykjavík there is no sane day trip to these caves: the drive alone is about five hours each way. The 3-day Arctic Adventures tour ($954) builds the ice cave into day two with nights near Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Or stay a night in the Höfn, Hali or Skaftafell area and book the cave from the lagoon the next morning.

What happens if the ice cave is closed on your tour day?

You get a choice: a glacier hike to the cave with a partial refund, or a full refund. Multi-day tours switch to another cave or a glacier hike.

The listing for the lagoon cave tour is clear about it. If the guide judges the cave unsafe, for example after a glacial flood or heavy rain, you are told at the meeting point. You can cancel there for a full refund, or join a glacier hike to the cave without going in and get 30% back.

Arctic Adventures says its 3-day tour usually visits the Crystal Cave at Breiðamerkurjökull and falls back to the Katla ice cave, farther west, or a glacier hike when that is not accessible. Guests report the trade-offs too. One reviewer in October 2026 wrote that the guide told them on the way that "we would only see one third of the ice cave". Early-season and wet-week bookings carry that risk. Keep a spare day in your plan if the cave is the reason you are going.

What is the best month for an ice cave tour in 2026-27?

January to March. The ice is coldest and most stable then; November and December work, with more risk of rain-related closures.

Guide to Iceland names February as the best month for stable ice and January as the quietest. We agree: book late January to early March if your dates are flexible. December has the shortest daylight, with sunrise near 11:00 at the lagoon, which squeezes the tour slots. Glacier Trips suggests booking two to three weeks ahead; go earlier for Christmas, New Year and February half-term weeks.

Getting there is part of the plan. Route 1 is open all winter but can close in storms; check umferdin.is before you set off. Our winter guide covers the drive and the daylight, and what to wear covers boots, which the cave tours check.
