Jökulsárlón in winter

The boats stop in November. The icebergs stay, the seals come in to fish, and inside the glacier the ice caves open. Winter is a different trip, not a worse one.

From mid-November to April there are no boats on Jökulsárlón. Everything else is still there: the icebergs, Diamond Beach, and more seals than in summer. Winter adds two things summer doesn't have. Natural ice caves under Breiðamerkurjökull, and a dark sky for the northern lights.

It also adds short days, wind and a road that sometimes closes. Here is how to plan around them.

The quick answer

Boats run from May to about 15 November; in winter there are none. Ice cave tours run roughly November to March from the lagoon car park; the 3-hour tour here is $157, ages 8 and up, and you need your own hiking shoes. Seals gather in larger numbers in winter. At the solstice, Höfn gets about four hours of daylight. Day trips still run from Reykjavík, but drive much of the way in the dark. Check umferdin.is for road conditions, and treat the aurora as a bonus, never a promise.

Can you visit Jökulsárlón in winter?

Yes. The lagoon, its icebergs and Diamond Beach are there all year, and the café stays open from 9 am to 5 pm from November to February.

The lagoon sits right on Route 1, which is kept open all winter except during storms. The national park says the region is accessible year-round. What you lose is the boats. What you get is quieter shores, low sun on the ice all day, more seals, ice caves and the chance of the aurora.

Day trips from Reykjavík run in winter too. The small-group tour adds a northern lights stop from 1 September to 1 April, though Fjaðrárgjúfur canyon on the same route may be closed in winter conditions.

A minibus of 17 at most, with a northern lights stop on the way home from September to April.

Do the boats run in winter?

No. The amphibian boats stop around 15 November and the zodiacs at the end of October. Both start again in May.

Winter weather and a lagoon full of moving ice make boat trips impossible. Look at the dates before you book: a trip in early November can still include the amphibian, from 10 am to 5 pm. The boat tour guide has the full timetable, and the 2027 boat season post the next opening date.

Want to be on the water in winter anyway? At Fjallsárlón, 10 km west, ice floating in a flotation suit runs all year, according to the operator fjallsarlon.is. It is floating, not a boat, and it is a different lagoon. See the Fjallsárlón ice floating tour.

When is ice cave season at Jökulsárlón?

Roughly November to March. The caves need steady frost to be safe, and guides check them every day.

Natural ice caves form inside Breiðamerkurjökull as meltwater carves tunnels in summer; when the frost comes, the glacier firms up and guides can take people in. Fjallsárlón's operator lists its ice cave tour from November to March. Most operators start in November, some earlier if the cold comes early, and finish in March or April.

Dates change with the weather each year. The 2026-27 ice cave season post follows this winter's start.

How does an ice cave tour from Jökulsárlón work?

You drive yourself to the lagoon, meet the guide at the Crystal Cave Tours sign by the main car park, and ride a super jeep to the glacier. The whole tour takes about 3 hours.

  • Meeting: at the sign that says Crystal Cave Tours, next to the main Jökulsárlón car park. Arrive 10 minutes early.
  • The ride: one guest timed "about 30 minutes very bumpy road from meet point to the glacier". Mention it if you get carsick.
  • Gear: helmet and crampons are provided. Hiking shoes are required and not rented on this tour.
  • Safety: the guide picks the cave each day. If no cave is safe, you choose between a glacier hike to the cave with 30% refunded, or a full refund on the spot.

There is no transfer from Reykjavík: the meeting point is about 390 km away. Sleep nearby, or book the 3-day tour, which includes a guided ice cave with all the gear and two nights.

Are there more seals at Jökulsárlón in winter?

Yes. Seals live around the lagoon all year and gather in larger numbers in winter, when they come in to fish.

Harbour seals and grey seals both breed in Icelandic waters, and the lagoon is open to the sea and full of fish, which brings in seals. The national park describes large seal colonies where the rivers meet the sea. Look on the floes near the channel to the sea and from the bridge. They are wild animals: keep your distance and never feed them.

Sightings are likely, never guaranteed. A grey, windy day can keep them in the water.

How much daylight is there at Jökulsárlón in winter?

About four hours at the winter solstice. In Höfn, 80 km east, the sun rises around 11 am and sets around 3 pm on 21 December.

Those figures come from WeatherSpark; there is useful twilight on either side. Days lengthen fast after New Year, and by early March you have more than ten hours.

On a day trip from Reykjavík in December, the bus leaves at 7:30 in full darkness and the first hours of scenery are lost. The lagoon stop falls in the early afternoon, close to sunset. Light is low and gold, which is good for photos, but you won't get a second chance at it. With two days, you see much more of the coast in daylight.

What are road conditions like on Route 1 in winter?

Usually open and cleared, but storms, ice and wind can close stretches for hours. Check umferdin.is every morning.

The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration posts live conditions and closures on umferdin.is and answers on phone 1777 from 6:30 am to 10 pm, every day (Vegagerðin). Safetravel.is posts weather alerts. The stretch along Breiðamerkursandur is open and exposed, and January is the windiest month in Höfn.

If you are not used to ice and gusts, let a professional drive. Judy, on a Gray Line day in February 2026, wrote that her driver "took us safely for 14 hours through some of the most challenging wind storms I've ever been through!!" When the road closes, the operator cancels and refunds or rebooks.

Can you see the northern lights at Jökulsárlón?

Yes, on clear, dark nights from about September to early April. The lagoon is far from city light, but clouds decide.

You need darkness, a clear sky and some activity. The Icelandic Met Office publishes a cloud cover and aurora forecast; check the cloud map first, because a strong forecast under thick cloud shows nothing. Seeing the lights over the icebergs means staying nearby. On a day trip you may catch them on the drive home, if the guide stops.

Vivian, on the 3-day tour in February 2026: "We saw the fabulous Northern Lights". Others don't. This winter's outlook is in the 2026-27 northern lights post.

Yes, if you plan for short days. The icebergs, Diamond Beach and seals are all there, and ice caves are only possible in winter. You lose the boat rides.

Not on the tours here. The ice cave tour meets at the lagoon, about 390 km from Reykjavík, with no transfer. The 3-day tour includes an ice cave with transport.

Do I need special shoes for an ice cave?

Yes. The ice cave tour requires hiking shoes and does not rent them; crampons and a helmet are provided. See what to wear.

How cold is Jökulsárlón in winter?

Milder than people expect: in nearby Höfn, average January highs are about 3°C and lows about -1°C. The wind is the problem, and makes it feel much colder.
