Ice floating at Fjallsárlón

At Fjallsárlón, the smaller glacier lagoon about 10 km west of Jökulsárlón, you zip into a thick immersion suit and float on your back among the icebergs. Pick it for something quieter and stranger than a boat ride, and remember it's a different lagoon.

Fjallsárlón Ice Floating Tour

About this experience

Fjallsárlón sits below the Fjallsjökull glacier, a short drive west of Jökulsárlón on Route 1. It's smaller and calmer, and the glacier face is close. The company that runs the boats there also runs this, which it calls the first ice floating tour in Iceland. You don't swim: an immersion suit keeps you dry and warm, and you lie back and drift between the ice with an instructor beside you.

The tour takes 1.5 hours with 8 people at most. You meet at the tour reception behind Frost restaurant, walk to the shore, suit up, get a short safety briefing and step in. Afterwards you get a coffee or hot chocolate at Frost. Fjallsárlón's own website lists it all year at ISK 15,900, and its Fjallsárlón boat tour, a separate trip, from April to November at ISK 11,300.

Two honest limits. This is not Jökulsárlón, and not a boat ride on it: if you want the famous lagoon from the water, you need the amphibian boat there. And it has only 23 reviews, so there's less to go on than for the big trips. Those 23 are nearly all five stars. Ages are 15 to 75, and it isn't for anyone pregnant or with heart problems.

What guests say

★★★★★

Floating among the glaciers was surreal, peaceful, and full of laughs! Igor had the best smile and took lots of great pictures. We would definitely do it again!

It was the most fun we had in Iceland. Swimming around with centuries old icebergs, touching and playing with them. All of that while feeling warm and toasty in a neoprene suit.

Tips before you book

  • Wear a thin warm layer under the suit, and keep a hat handy for afterwards.
  • Take dry socks for afterwards, even with the hot drink.
  • Combine it with Jökulsárlón on the same day. The two lagoons are about 10 km apart on Route 1.
  • Bring a phone in a waterproof pouch, or let the guide take photos: guests say they're good at it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fjallsárlón the same as Jökulsárlón?

No. Fjallsárlón is a separate, smaller lagoon about 10 km west, below the Fjallsjökull glacier. This tour floats there, not on Jökulsárlón.

Do you get wet?

No. The immersion suit keeps you dry and warm while you float; one guest called it "warm and toasty".

Who can do ice floating?

Ages 15 to 75 on the booking. It's not recommended if you're pregnant or have heart problems or other serious medical conditions.

Can I also take a boat at Jökulsárlón?

Yes, the amphibian boats there run from May to about 15 November, ISK 7,100 per adult in 2026. Our boat tour guide covers them.
