Diamond Beach is the nickname for the black-sand shore where the lagoon empties into the sea. Icebergs float out through the short channel under the Route 1 bridge, the waves break them up, and the surf throws the pieces back onto the sand. The national park calls the eastern side Eystri-Fellsfjara.
Every day trip on this site stops at both, and most give the beach its own 15 to 30 minutes.
The quick answer
Diamond Beach is the black-sand beach on the ocean side of the Route 1 bridge, a few minutes' walk from Jökulsárlón. Ice from the lagoon washes up there all year, more on some days than others. Day trips give it 15 to 30 minutes; on Gray Line it comes out of your hour at the lagoon. Stay off the ice, keep back from the waves, and come at sunrise or sunset for the best light.

Where is Diamond Beach in Iceland?
On the south-east coast, on Route 1, right where Jökulsárlón drains into the sea. The beach lies on both sides of the river mouth, across the bridge from the lagoon.
It is part of Breiðamerkursandur, the wide glacial plain in front of Breiðamerkurjökull, about 370 km east of Reykjavík. From the lagoon car park you walk a few minutes toward the sea, or drive across the bridge to the beach car parks. The busier one is on the east side, by Eystri-Fellsfjara, where the park has put up a photo exhibition. The west side is usually quieter, with just as much ice.
Fjallsárlón, 10 km west, has no beach of its own. Diamond Beach belongs to Jökulsárlón.

Is Diamond Beach the same as Jökulsárlón?
No. Jökulsárlón is the lake of icebergs on the land side of the bridge; Diamond Beach is the sea beach on the other side, where pieces of those icebergs end up.
At the lagoon you see big icebergs floating on still water, the glacier behind, and seals on the floes. At the beach you see small pieces of the same ice on black sand, with surf. They feel very different, and photos of one are often labelled as the other.
You can see both in one stop if you hurry, but they are worth separate time. On a day trip from Reykjavík, pick a tour that stops at each.

The longest Diamond Beach stop of the day trips: 30 minutes on the sand after an hour at the lagoon.

Between 15 and 30 minutes on the day trips; on Gray Line, the beach is inside the one-hour lagoon stop.

Fifteen minutes is enough for photos. Thirty lets you walk along the tide line and find the clear pieces. One small-group guest in August 2026 got a bonus: "We also got to see seals swimming in the ocean."
Is Diamond Beach dangerous?
It can be, if you climb on the ice or turn your back on the sea. Waves here are strong and cold, and ice blocks can roll.
Diamond Beach doesn't have Reynisfjara's reputation for sneaker waves, but it is the same open North Atlantic. Stay well back from the wet sand when the surf is big. A wave that reaches your knees in water this cold can knock you over and drag you back with it.
- Never stand on the ice. Blocks are slippery, have sharp edges, and can tip or be lifted by the next wave.
- Keep children close and away from ice in the surf zone.
- Watch the sea, not only your camera screen.
- In winter, check safetravel.is for wind warnings before you set out.

When is the best light at Diamond Beach?
Sunrise and sunset, when low sun shines through the ice. In winter the sun stays low all day; in June it sets close to midnight.
Light through clear ice is what makes the photos. In Höfn, the nearest town to the east, the sun sets at about 11:40 pm around midsummer and rises around 11 am in late December (WeatherSpark). Day trips arrive in the early afternoon, which in summer means flat, high light, and in winter means the sun is already low and gold.
For sunrise or a summer sunset, you have to sleep nearby. Höfn, Hali and the farms around Skaftafell are the closest places to stay. A 2-day tour doesn't time the beach for the light, but it gets you there without the 5 am alarm.

Almost always some, but the amount changes daily with the tides, the wind and how much ice leaves the lagoon.
Some days the beach is covered in blocks the size of cars. On others there are only a few pieces at the tide line. Guide to Iceland notes that the most floating ice on the lagoon has been measured in February and March, but a full lagoon doesn't promise a full beach. A May 2026 guest on one day trip noticed "There weren't as many icebergs in Glacier Lagoon as the photos depicts but it's still a rare sight".
Walk both sides of the river mouth if you have time. Ice can pile up on one side more than the other.

How do you visit Diamond Beach in winter?
On any winter day trip or with a car. The beach is open all year, and in winter the ice often lasts longer on the cold sand.
There are no boats from mid-November to April, so the beach and the shore of the lagoon are what you come for, plus an ice cave if you stay nearby. Daylight is short: about four hours at the solstice in Höfn. Route 1 can close in storms; check umferdin.is before you drive.

Coming by ship? An hour at the lagoon and 30 minutes on Diamond Beach from Djúpivogur port.

Can you walk from Jökulsárlón to Diamond Beach?
Yes. It is a few minutes' walk from the lagoon car park toward the sea. Gray Line's listing tells guests to walk over during the lagoon stop.
Can you take ice from Diamond Beach?
Leave it. Picking up a small piece for a photo is common, but climbing on blocks is dangerous, and the ice belongs to a protected national park landscape.
Is there parking at Diamond Beach?
Yes, there are car parks on both sides of the river mouth by Route 1. The east side is the busiest; the west is usually quieter.
What is the official name of Diamond Beach?
It has no single official name. The eastern part is Eystri-Fellsfjara, and the whole area belongs to Breiðamerkursandur.
