Booking choice: The Glacier Lagoon day trip, from $185 per person. Check dates Tour details
Jökulsárlón is about 370 km from Reykjavík along Route 1. Without stops, that is roughly five hours of driving each way. Every day tour leaves between 7:00 and 7:30 am and gets back between about 9:30 and 10:30 pm.
Itineraries and minutes below come from the tour listings themselves, and from what guests write afterwards.
The quick answer
Yes, if the lagoon is the one thing you came for and you can sit on a bus for about ten hours. You get 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes at the lagoon and 15 to 30 minutes at Diamond Beach, with waterfall stops on the way. The best-rated pick for most people is the Glacier Lagoon day trip at $185. If you have two days, a 2-day tour gives you 90 minutes at the lagoon, a glacier hike and a night on the coast for the same drive.

Is a day trip to Jökulsárlón from Reykjavík worth it?
If you have one free day and the lagoon is high on your list, yes. If you hate long bus rides, no.
The ratings say most people think so: 4.4 to 4.7 across the big day tours, from hundreds of reviews each. The same reviews are honest about the cost. A Gray Line guest put it well: "This is a loooong bus ride, with 10 of the 14 hours in a small coach bus. The Diamond Beach and Glacier lagoon were awesome and made the ride worthwhile."
Skip it if you get carsick, travel with small children, or only have three days in Iceland and haven't seen the Golden Circle. Do it if you already know the drive is the price, and the icebergs are the reason you booked the flight.
Fourteen and a half hours, Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss on the way, and 1 hour 20 minutes at the lagoon.

Pickup at 7:00 to 7:30, waterfalls and lunch on the way out, the lagoon in the early afternoon, Diamond Beach, dinner in Vík, and Reykjavík again around 10 pm.

| Evening | Seljalandsfoss | 25 min |

One guest on the boat version of the same day: "We started at 7:30am and got back to our hotel at 10:30pm." In autumn the last waterfall can come after dark; a September guest found it "not safe to walk behind".
How long do you actually get at the lagoon?
One hour on the BusTravel, Gray Line and small-group tours; 1 hour 20 minutes on Reykjavik Excursions; 1 hour 30 minutes on the 2-day tour.
The boat, if you take it, comes out of that time. On the Gray Line day, Diamond Beach is inside the hour too: the listing tells you to walk over during the lagoon stop. The others give the beach its own 15 to 30 minutes.
An hour is enough to walk the shore, watch for seals near the channel and take your photos. It isn't enough to do that and a boat ride and a coffee. Choose one, or pick the tour with the longer stop.

The longest lagoon stop of the day trips from Reykjavík: 1 hour 20 minutes, then 15 minutes at Diamond Beach.

The Glacier Lagoon day trip for most people; the small-group minibus if you want a canyon and fewer people; the boat-included trip if being on the water matters most.

The small-group tour is the longest day, about 16 hours, because it adds Fjaðrárgjúfur canyon, the Foss á Síðu waterfall and the Hofskirkja turf church, and from 1 September to 1 April a northern lights stop on the way home. It needs at least 4 adults to run. Fred, on a big-coach day in August 2026, regretted "opting for a full bus rather than a small group tour, as the bus load created its own flash crowd at the rest stops".
Seventeen people at most, Fjaðrárgjúfur canyon on the way, and a northern lights stop from September.

With two days, take two. You get 90 minutes at the lagoon, a guided glacier hike and Reynisfjara, and the drive is split in half.
The 2-day glacier tour leaves at 9:00, not 7:30. Day one runs along the south coast: Seljalandsfoss, Gljúfrabúi, Skógafoss, a 1 hour 30 minute blue ice hike on Sólheimajökull with all the safety gear, and Reynisfjara beach. You sleep on the south coast. Day two goes through Vík, the Eldhraun lava field and Fjaðrárgjúfur to the lagoon, with 20 minutes on the beach after. Back in Reykjavík around 9:30 pm. It costs $639, or $689 with the boat, for a group of 19 at most, and rates 5.0 from 205 reviews.
Emily, in 2024: "I'm very glad we decided on the 2 day trip instead of doing it all in 1." With three days, the 3-day tour adds the Golden Circle and an ice cave for $954.

Ninety minutes at the lagoon, a guided glacier hike and a night on the coast, in a group of 19 at most.
Explore the 2-day glacier tour Tour detailsShould you drive yourself instead?
Only if you will stay the night out east. Ten hours of driving in one day on Route 1 is tiring and, in winter, risky.
Driving gives you control over timing: the lagoon at 8 pm in June light, or at sunrise. It also means about 740 km in a day on a two-lane road with one-lane bridges, sheep and tour coaches. A guest on one day trip warned that on a single-carriageway road, an accident ahead means "you'll be stuck on that road until it clears", bus or car.
If you drive, pay the national park's parking fee at the lagoon: ISK 1,110 for a car on the current price list, valid until midnight, in the Parka app or at the machine. Check umferdin.is for road conditions before you leave. Better still, book a room in Höfn or near Skaftafell and split the drive.

What should you bring on the day?
Snacks, water, a waterproof jacket, a hat and gloves, a charged phone and a power bank. Meals are not included on any day trip.
- Food: the bus stops at places where you can buy lunch and dinner, but the stops are short and the queues long. Krisha, in January 2026: "A long day but it was very well worth it. Take snacks."
- Layers: warm on the bus, cold at the lagoon. Easy to take off and put on.
- Rain gear: for Seljalandsfoss, where the path behind the falls is wet.
- A seat on the left: going east, the glaciers are on the left side of the bus, the sea on the right.

Check dates for the Glacier Lagoon day tripCan you see the northern lights on the way back?
Sometimes, from September to early April, when the sky is dark and clear on the drive home. It is never guaranteed.
The small-group tour builds in a northern lights stop from 1 September to 1 April, depending on the sky. The Reykjavik Excursions trip mentions looking for them on the way back. Michelle, in October 2026: the guide "went out of his way to stop for the northern lights when we saw them on the tour".
Don't book a day trip for the aurora. Book it for the ice, and treat a green sky on the way home as a bonus. In winter the whole day changes: see Jökulsárlón in winter.
